Set 4 Terms Flashcards
Coordinate plane
a grid that maps points according to two variables, x and y
Polygon
any closed two-dimensional figure made up of line segments
Edge
a line segment where two faces of a three-dimensional solid touch
Range
all possible y-values of a function. The set of all outputs for a given set of inputs.
Cosine
a trig function equivalent to the ratio of the leg adjacent to an angle over the hypotenuse
Secant
a trig function equivalent to the ratio of the hypotenuse over the leg adjacent to the angle
Rhombus
any quadrilateral in which all four sides are equal
Quadrilateral
a polygon with four sides
Complementary angles
angles that form a right angle together. Complementary angles add up to 90 degrees.
Supplementary angles
two angles that make a straight line. Add up to 180 degrees.
Radian
a unit of measuring angles. A full circle is 2 pi radians.
Sine
a trig function equivalent to the ratio of the leg opposite an angle over the hypotenuse
Cotangent
a trig function equivalent to the ratio of the leg adjacent to an angle over the leg opposite the angle
Standard deviation
a calculation showing how spread out from the mean a list of values is
Regular polygon
a polygon in which all sides and angles are equal
Similar triangles
triangles with corresponding sides in the same ratio
Interior angle
an angle inside a polygon formed by adjacent sides of the polygon
Tangent line
a line that touches a curve at exactly one point
Tangent
a trig function equivalent to the ratio of the leg opposite an angle over the leg adjacent to the angle
Vertex
a corner of a polygon, where two sides meet. Also the maximum or minimum of a parabola.
Ellipse
the set of all points such that the sum of the distance from a point on the ellipse to two points is a constant. It looks like a circle that has been squashed a little in the middle.
Trapezoid
a quadrilateral with exactly one set of parallel lines
Exterior angle
an angle that is supplementary to an interior angle of a polygon
Matrix
a way to organize a group of numbers in rows and columns
Linear function
a function whose graph makes a straight line
Cosecant
a trig function equivalent to the ratio of the hypotenuse over the leg opposite the angle; the reciprocal of the sine function.
Isosceles triangle
a triangle in which exactly two sides are equal. The two angles opposite the equal sides are also equal.
Isosceles trapezoid
a trapezoid in which the two non-parallel sides are equal
Logarithm
a way to solve equations with variables in exponents.
