Set 2 Terms Flashcards
Complex number
a polynomial in the form a + bi, consisting of a real number, a, plus an imaginary number, bi, with a coefficient, b
Amplitude
the height of a wave function from the middle line to the top of a hump
Parabola
the shape of the graph of a quadratic function
Leg
either side of a right triangle that makes up its right angle. That is, any side other than the hypotenuse
Factorial
the product of all consecutive integers up to and including a certain integer. Symbol is an exclamation point. 4! = 1 x 2 x 3 x 4
Cube
a three-dimensional box in which all the edges are equal. Each of a cube’s six faces is a square.
Axis
one of two perpendicular lines that define values in the coordinate plane
Zero
the boundary between positive and negative numbers. Zero is neither positive nor negative. Zero is a real number, zero is an integer, and zero is even. Zero is not prime.
Reciprocal
the flip of a fraction. The reciprocal of 2/5 is 5/2.
Right triangle
any triangle that contains a right angle
Quadrant
one of four regions into which the coordinate plane is divided by the two axes.
Congruent
equal in measure. Can be said of angles, segments, triangles, or any shape.
Parallelogram
a quadrilateral with two sets of parallel sides
Intercept
the point where the graph of a function crosses an axis
Diagonal
a line segment connecting any two vertices of a polygon, excluding any segment that makes a side of the figure
Ray
a part of a line that starts from a point and extends infinitely in one direction
Probability
the likelihood of an event occurring. Probability of an event is equal to the number of times the event may occur divided by the total number of possible occurrences.
Undefined
a function is undefined when no solution can be found for a given x-value
Set
any group of numbers
Rational number
a number that can be expressed as a fraction or ratio of two integers. All integers are themselves rational numbers.
Prime factor
a factor that is prime, thus cannot be broken up into smaller factors
Perpendicular
two lines that make a right angle are perpendicular to each other. The slope of perpendicular lines are the negative reciprocals of each other.
Domain
the set of all possible x-values of a function. All inputs for which the function is defined.
Equilateral
having all sides of equal length
Face
a two-dimensional figure that makes up part of a three-dimensional solid
Hypotenuse
the side of a right triangle that is opposite the right angle. The hypotenuse is always the longest side of a right triangle.
Coefficient
the number that a variable is multiplied by
Permutation
a calculation for determining the number of arrangements of a set when order matters
Combination
a calculation for determining the number of arrangements of a set when order doesn’t matter
Period
the length of one cycle of a repeating event
