Session 7: Medical Imaging & Cartilage Flashcards
What is an artifact?
A fold in tissue, a problem with the biopsy and the way it was processed
What is ground substance and where is it found?
Substance in extracellular space that contains all components of ECM
Consists of proteoglycan & hyaluronic acid
Located in lacuna
Name the cartilage in the trachea, what is its function?
Hyaline cartilage
Reinforces the trachea and keeps the airway open
What types of cells predominate in the perichondrium of hyaline cartilage?
chondroblasts
Name a function of the ciliated epithelium lining the tracheal lumen
Sweep/waft mucus out of the lungs & remove debris
Why may chondrocytes undergo mitotic divison?
To cover up a tear in the matrix
Describe the alignment of cells in fibrocartilage
Distributed in rows
Where is fibrocartilage found? (6)
In intervertebral discs, joint capsules, menisci of knees, sternoclavicular joint, temporomandibular joint & pubic symphysis
What makes fibroblasts so strong?
The matrix is dominated by a dense regular network of bundles of collagen fibres arranged parallel to each other in several layers, the bundles in adjacent layers run in different directions
Why is the epiglottis covered in epithelial cells?
Because it has a mucous membrane
Why is there little repair of the pinna of the ear?
Chondrocytes have died, and there are only chondroblasts present
What do elastic fibres enable in elastic cartilage?
- confers elasticity
- tissue returns to original position
Where is elastic cartilage found? (3 Es)
- the pinna of the ear
- the eustachian tube
- the epiglottis
What is the lumen of the trachea line with?
Pseudostratified ciliated epithelium
How come hyaline cartilage is pliable & resistant to repeated pressure?
contains water which is non-compressible
