Session 2: Early Embryogenesis Flashcards
What is the function of the hypoblast?
It lines the blastocyst cavity forming the yolk sac
What is the function of the epiblast?
Forms 3 germ layers and forms the amniotic sac
What is the function of the syncytiotrophoblast?
Role in fetal-maternal gas exchange, nutrient exchange, immunological and metabolic functions.
Facilitates implantation of blastocyst in maternal endometrium
What is the function of the cytotrophoblast?
Route blood flow through the placenta for the growing embryo to use
Why is C-section indicated in placenta praevia?
Baby cannot come out of the cervix without ripping the placenta due to blockage
Avoid severe bleeding during vaginal delivery.
What is an ectopic pregnancy?
- Fertilized egg grows outside of the uterus
- Implantation occurs at site other than the uterine body
- Can be peritoneal or ovarian
What is placenta privae?
Implantation occurs in the lower uterine segment
Why can placenta privae cause bleeding?
Cervix thins and opens up causing blood vessels connecting the placenta and the uterus to become vulnerable to tearing and then bleeding
What is the notochord and what are its functions?
Solid rod of mesodermal cells in the midline.
