What is social justice?

A

Fair distribution of wealth, resources, responsibilities, and opportunities in society. Manage the benefits and burdens of society and all people should have access to equitable treatment.

What is equity vs. equality?

A

Equity is adjusting distribution to account for individual needs which put some at disadvantage. Equality is all individuals receive the same amount.

What is nurses role in advocating about social justice?

A

Social justice advocacy is sensitivity to the needs of people especially to needs of poor and oppressed. Nurses advocacy includes safeguard patient autonomy, act on behalf of patient, and champion social justice. Nurses have ethical obligation to be aware of oppression that exists and utilize strategies to alleviate injustice.

What is upstream approach vs. downstream approach?

A

Upstream is acknowledge health outcomes tied to social determinants of health, and we ask why (social justice). Nurses use downstream which is working to treat and cure. Downstream misses factors and its a blame the victim procedure because illness is seen as fault of person.

What are the social determinants of health?

A

Include income, social status, education, gender, culture, and social environment. They are all interrelated and they influence on another. Have an impact on our health as well.

What are the 3 types of justice?

A

Social- equitable distribution of benefits/burdens
Distributive- equal distribution of goods/services
Market- honour rights of those who earned entitlement to those privileges. Inequality is allowed as long as they result in fair market system

What is the nurses role in addressing SDOH?

A

Engage with policies and advocate to promote health equity. Advocate for publicly funded health services. Provide sensitive and empowering care at all levels. Recognize the significance of SDOH and include them in assessments, diagnoses, planning, and implementation.

What is the nurses role in health promotion?

A

Perform needs assessment, consider stakeholders, create proposal, implement, and evaluate (process). Let public know about disease and educate them. Make sure that is is holistic and long term.

What is domestic abuse and nurses role in violence against women?

A

DA= abuse happens in intimate relationships in the home, can be physical, verbal, and mental.

Nurses need to advocate and have referral for local resources. they need to develop knowledge so they can respond and recognize the violent expierences of clients.

How do nurses promote health and well being?

A

Nurses work with people to attain their highest level of health. We use care directed at the health and wellbeing of person/family/community while using the least restrictive measures and collaboration. Nurses provide care directed towards health/wellbeing of persons receiving care.
