What did nursing history start with?
Ancient Egyptians and Hebrews, greek and romans, hippocates,
What is the effect of christianity and middle ages on nursing?
Structured nursing care, had nuns, church was involved with healthcare, crusades.
Renaissance/enlightenment effect on nursing?
Impact on science, advancement in science, germ theory was developed
Industrial Revolution effect on nursing?
Hazardous workplace, child labour, increased disease, little public health policy and laws
Who is Florence Nightingale?
Founder of professional nursing. Started nursing in Crimean War and she saved many of the soldiers from British troops with her care. She decreases mortality and death rates, highlighted cleanliness, and she’s a foundational person in nursing. She also advocated for the standards of nursing care to be improved.
Catholic hospitals?
Catholic nursing sisters built network of nurse run hospitals. Were charitable institutions devoted to care of the ill. Hierarchy of nuns. Nursing sisters viewed their work as spiritual ministry.
In Canada, what was there for nursing care before Florence?
Indigenous healers and midwifes. They also provided settlers with care as well.
Colonization in Nursing? (INDG hospital, residential schools)
It suppressed healing knowledge and practices of INDG people. Had Indian hospitals specifically that reveals health care services are unequal. These hospitals were overcrowded, underfunded, understaffed, abuse, assimilation, and poor health conditions. Also nurses worked in residential schools and participated in nutrition experiments that were unethical.
Colonization (colonies and British Regime and opening of west)?
New colony of Canada resulted in infectious disease.
New France Colony- Marie Herbert is first lay nurse, provided care to settlers/INDG. Jean Mance was only person with health knowledge.
British Regime- had grey nuns and lay providers.
Opening of West- grey nuns went out and established missions in Canada. Hospitals were established by religions.
What are hospital schools?
Students provided nursing care. Lived at hospital in poor conditions. Financial benefit for hospitals. Students didn’t have good quality of education. INDG women and coloured people could not go to nursing school.
4 metaparadigms of nursing?
Person (focus of care, support network, want patient to be empowered), health (relative to person, do they have access?, wellness), environment (surrounding factors internal and external resources, want to modify factors to enhance health) and place. They all relate to nursing and they affect one another.
What is a nursing theory?
Describe, explain, predict to inform nursing practice. Establishes professional boundaries of nursing and it generates future knowledge.
