Session 33 - The Anterior Leg and Dorsum of the Foot Flashcards
Which nerves supply the anterior and lateral compartments of the leg?
Anterior = deep peroneal nerve Lateral = superficial peroneal nerve
Where is the common peroneal nerve vulnerable to injury? What would be the
result of an injury to it?
Vuln cos wraps around neck of fibula
Damage caused by fractures and direct trauma
Result is weakness of the anterior and lateral leg muscles
Foot drop caused
Sensation over the lateral leg and dorsum of the foot is also impaired
Which artery supplies the anterior compartment of the leg? Where does this
artery arise from?
Anterior tibial artery
Popliteal artery
What muscles extends the toes?
Extensor hallucis longus extends the big toe.
Extensor digitorum longus and extensor digitorum brevis extend toes 2-5.
What nerve innervates the toe extensors?
Deep peroneal nerve
Where are pulses palpable in the leg? Give the name of the arteries and the
locations where they can be palpated
The popliteal pulse - popliteal fossa.
The posterior tibial pulse - posterior to the medial malleolus.
The dorsalis pedis pulse - dorsum of the foot
What complications can arise from an open fracture of the tibial shaft?
Infection of bone - osteomyelitis
What movements take place at the ankle joint?
Dorsiflexion
Plantarflexion
Dorsiflexion is toes?
Up
Plantarflexion is toes?
Down
What movements occur at the subtalar joint?
Inversion and eversion of the foot
