session 11-blood cells and haemopoiesis Flashcards
What is the lifespan of red blood cells in days and months?
120 days/4 months
What is the role of reticular cells?
Direct t and b lymphocytes to specific regions
Describe the structure of platelets
Round blue particles. Dense granules contain fibrinogen, ADP and ca2+
Involved in clotting cascade
How are the cellular components of blood derived from stem cells?
1)stem cells divides (proliferates) into two. One to replace original stem cell and one that differentiates
2)the cell differentiates into either a myeloid cell (Rbc,wbc, platelet) or Lymphoid cell (immune response cell)
3)then with cytokines, will differentiate into a particular cell
E.g. Thrombopoietin promotes differentiation into platelet
What is a reticulocytes?
An immature red blood cell
What cell type produces platelets?
Megakaryocytes
Where do macrophages originate from?
Monocytes
Where do platelets originate from?
Megakaryocytes
What is neutrophil maturation controlled by?
G-CSF
Enhances chemotaxis and phagocytosis
What are the 3 main organs in the reticuloendothelial system?
Spleen,liver and lymph nodes
What are the roles of eosinophils?
- phagocytose antigen-antibody complex
- mediate hypersensitivity reaction, asthma and skin inflammation
What do basophils contain and what do they do?
- histamine,heparin,hyaluronic acid,seratonin
- allergic reactions
What is the role of neutrophils?
Kill as many microbes as possible
