9
Q

Three Systems of drainage

A

Separate: foul and surface water separate
Combined: discharged into same sewer
Partially separate: certain amount of surface water discharges to foul sewer while the rest if carried in a surface water sewer

Q

Designing a drainage system

A
Layout must be simple
Pipes must be laid straight
Pipes in non absorbent material
Pipes must be supported
Must be properly ventilated
Accessible for cleaning and inspection
0.8m/s min 2m/s speed
Must be 900mm below roads

16
Q

Main ways to reduce demand for space heating

A

high levels of insulation
high performance windows with insulated frames
Airtight building fabric
Thermal bridge free construction
Mechanical system with highly efficient heat recovery (where warm stale heat goes through a heat exchanger and pre-heats the incoming fresh air.
Thermostatic Radiator Valves (timer on a boiler)
Smart meters

17
Q

Different types of space heating (direct and indirect)

A
Radiant heater
Convection heater
Fan heaters
Storage heating
Domestic elecretical underfloor heating
Lighting system
Heat pumps
Radiators
Warm air
18
Q

What are heat pumps

A

Two way air conditioners. During summer an air con works by moving heat ffrom relatively cool indoors to the warm outside. In winter it reverses and scavenges heat from outside.

19
Q

Advantages of heat pumps

A
Lower running costs
Less Maintenance
Safer than alternatives
Low carbon emissions
Long life expectancy
Provide cooling
20
Q

Disadvantages of heat pumps

A
High upfront costs
Difficult to install
Questionable sustainbility
Carbon neutral
Fan= noise issue
