Roofs Flashcards
Functional requirements of a roof (8)
Weather exclusion Structural Stability Thermal capacity Sound Insulation Aesthetics Functional need of building user Cost
Difference between a warm and a cold roof
the insulation is laid on the slope of the roof, above or between the rafters (more energy efficient), unlike that of a cold roof where the insulation is laid above or between the ceiling joists
Problems associated with poor roof construction
Rot
Moisture build up
Loss of heating
Higher energy bills
Advantage of an insulated loft
dvantages of the loft fully insulated would mean that heat is less likely to escape saving on energy costs and would contribute to a more sustainable home. If you did have an indirect water system the tanks pipes are less likely to freeze also , again saving in external costs.
What defines a pitched roof
Anything above 10 degrees angle
Factors affecting selection of the roof
Size and plan: simple build= pitched complicated= flat
Type of building and location:
Bearing capacity of the soil: shorter spans= more economical
Special loading requirements
Accomodation of services
Natural lighting requirments
Aesthetic
Speedy Completion
Costs: flat roofs 40% cheaper to construct but higher maintenance
Sustainability
Types of pitched roof
Timber
Steel
Concrete
Aluminium
Types of flat roof
Cold roof with asphalt
PVC
What is the difference between extensive and intensive green roof
extensive has deeper soil (over 150mm) Green roofs are concerened with promoting wildlife on the roof and greenery
Reduce run off, improve water quality, reduce noise and air pollution and increase longeivity of roofing membrane
What is a cool roof
Made from light materials which reflect the suns rays preventing it from gaining too much heat
What is a blue roof
Collects rainwater to make the building cooler
