What causes serotonin syndrome?
A
The use of multiple medications that increase the amount of serotonin at the synaptic cleft
eg SSRI's + TCA SSRI's + MAOi SSRI's + lithium SSRI + Clomipramine

How does SS present?
A
Cardio: Tachycardia, sweating, increase or decreased BP, flushing
Neurology: Tremor, hyperreflexia, myoclonus, delirium, seizures
Gastro: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdo pain

How do you differentiate NMS from SS?
A
History: Which agents they’ve taken
Examination: NMS has hyporeflexia and cogwheeling/lead pipe rigidity whereas SS has hyperreflexia and clonus

What is clonus?
A
Involuntary, rhythmic muscular contractions and relaxations

What are the treatment of SS?
A
Crypohepatine
Clompromazine
Propranolol
