Serotonin Flashcards
5-HT2A
Platelets
What does serotonin do to healthy vs unhealthy vessels
Healthy: vasodilation
Unhealthy: vasoconstriction
Where is 80% of serotonin?
In enterochromaffin cells in the GI tract
5-HT1b
Gi tracT: Secretory and peristaltic reflexes
How is serotonin synthesized?
Tryptophan—>TPH (tryptophan hydroxylase, RLS)–>eventually get to 5HT
SERT
Presynaptic transporter that removes 5HT from cleft
S allele for SERT leads to inc depression
VMAT
Vesicular monoamine transporter transports 5HT from cytoplasm into vesicle to protect it from MAO breakdown
Fenfluramine MOA
Inhibits SERT and VMAT
Serotonin Syndrome
Abdominal pain, diarrhea, sweating, fever, tachycardia, increased BP, altered mental stae
What disease is associated with 5HT1A
GAD (increased GABA)
What disease is associated with 5HT 1D/1F
Migraine (reduce neuroinflammation and vasoconstrict and inhibit CGRP relase)
How do we think SSRIs work
Increase serotonin, increased CREB, increased BDNF, increased hippocampal neurogenesis
