Ball: 12-14 months (1-1.25 years)
- rolls ball forward
- throws small ball by extending arm at shoulder or elbow
Ball: 15-18 months (1.25-1.5 years)
throws ball in standing while maintaining balance
Ball: 19-24 months (1.5-2 years)
- kicks and throws ball 3 feet
- no extension of hip or shoulder
- no reciprocal movement of arms or legs
Ball: 25-30 months (2-2.5 years)
- attempts to catch ball with straight arms
- overhand throw by moving up and back
- small ball travels 7 feet before touching floor
- differentiates with underhand throw with arm moving down and back
- extends leg back with bent knee to kick ball forward 6 feet
Ball: 31-36 months (2.5-3 years)
catches 8 inch ball with arm extended
Ball: 37-42 months (3-3.5 years)
- uses upper trunk rotation and arms
- arms and legs moving in opposition for overhand throw of 10 feet
- hits target throwing underhand
- catches with arms bent
Ball: 43-48 months (3.5-4 years)
hits target with overhand toss from 5 feet (small ball)
Ball: 49-54 months (4-4.5 years)
- hits target from 12 feet throwing overhand
- catches small ball with hands and elbows bent
Ball: 61-72 months (5-6 years)
- kicks ball so it travels 12 feet in air
- bounces and catches small ball with two hands
one-leg balance progression
- stands on one leg momentarily (2 y/o)
- 3 seconds (3 y/o)
- increase on favored leg and non-dominant leg begins to develop one leg standing balance (3-4 y/o)
- stand on one leg 10 seconds without sway (4-5 y/o)
- stand on either leg 10 second without sway (6-7 y/o)
Jumping progression
- starts jumping with two feet (1.5-2)
- jumps off low step; may start hopping on dominant leg (2)
- can jump off 16-20”; feet not necessarily together (2.5)
- jump forward with 2 feet for 2 feet, jump over 1-2” object, hop on either leg 3-5x (3-3.5)
- jump forward with 1 leg (3.5-4)
- jump down 32” with two feet (4-4.5)
- jump forward 3 feet (4.5-4)
- jump over rope 10” off floor, hop easily on 1 foot (5-5.5)
up and down stairs
- walk up steps marking time without rail and down marking time with support (2 years)
- alternate feet walking up steps (2.5)
- alternate feet walking up and down without support (3-3.5)
- depends on the steps
