Sequences Flashcards
Sequential context
The position of an utterance in a sequence of utterances and how crucial it is for utterances to have meaning in sequential context
What are “openings and closings”?
Schegloff and Sacks
the way particular devices are used as pre-closing statements to get people off the phone i.e. “so, right, okay, well”
What is turn-taking?
Only 1 person is speaking at any one time. If there is overlap, then it is brief.
TRPs, TCUs
Turn-taking rule 1
If A selects B in the current turn, then A must stop and B must speak, transition occurring at the first TRP after A has selected B
If A does not select B, then anyone else may self-select, first speaker gaining rights to the next turn
If A does not select B, and no-one self-selects under B, then A may (but need not) continue (and thus claim rights to a further turn)
Turn-taking rule 2
If rule 1c) has been applied by A, then rules 1a)-c) apply recursively
Pauses
can have accountability, once one person has finished speaking, that is then the other person’s pause and are accountable for i
Eye gaze
when asking a question, eye gaze can shift but will always ultimately return to the asker. Example: President Reagan, briefly tried a lottery system with the press in order to control turn-taking but actually allowed the press too much control as they could ask follow up questions as there were no interruptions
Laughter
Laughter infiltration utterances - role for laughter to deal with improprieties
Breath
inbreath and outbreath, e.g. hhh (outbreath) and .hh (inbreath)
Can mark the start of speech, holding a turn, or the end of speech
