hot, red, swollen, painful joint
may be immobile
most commonly affected joint

triad of rash, tensosnyovitis, migratory arthritis (changes site)
arthritis-dermatitis syndrome
- caused by gonorrhoea
diagnostic investigation of septic arthritis
joint aspiration
- gram stain + culture
what additional tests should be performed in suspected gonococcal arthritis
urethral, rectal + throat swabs
treatment of septic arthritis
antibiotics 4-6 weeks
- initially IV for 2 weeks
tx staph aureus
flucloxacillin
tx MRSA
vancomycin
tx gonorrhoea
cefotaxime
