Inflammation of a joint cause by a bacterial infection

- diabetes
- immunosuppresion
- pre-exsiting joint disease
- on steroids

Symptoms
A
- pain
- fever
- loss of function

Cause
A
- staph aureus, strep
- neisseria gonnorhoea
- H.influenzae (children)

Spread
A
- haematogenous spread
- disseminated from osteomyelitis
- spread from adjacent soft tissue infection
- diangostic or therapeutic emeasuers
- pentrating damage by puncture or trauma

Investigations
A
- Blood cultures
- FBC (leucocytosis)
- urgent joint aspiration for synovial fluid microscopy and culture

Treatment
A
Consider in any acutely inflammed joint as can destroy joint in <24 hours
Immediate treament with IV ABX after aspiration
