What age population is most at risk for sepsis?

A

Young children!

This is due to young kids having an immature immune system. Mom can also transmit initial infection to baby at birth- group B strep and ecoli most likely from mom to baby.

What are risk factors for developing sepsis?

A

-prematurity
-congenital abnormalities
-acquired injuries that disrupt skin and mucous membranes
-** administration of TPN **
-nosocomial exposure (aka hospital exposure)

What is the criteria for diagnosis of sepsis?

A

Sepsis is diagnosed based on a suspected or proven INFECTION and two of the following:
-hypo/hyperthermia
-leukopenia/leukocytosis
-tachycardia
-tachypnea
