Seperation techniques: chromatography Flashcards
1
Q
What is chromatography?
A
Chromatography is a way of separation a dissolved substance.
It is often used when the substances are coloured such as ink.
This technique works well on filter paper
2
Q
Name the 2 stages of chromatography.

The stationary phase - the component which stays put.
The mobile phase - the component which moves.
3
Q
What is the Rf value? and what does it show?
A
The Rf value stands for the retention value. It shows the solubility of a pigment. The higher the Rf value the more soluble a pigment is, the lower the Rf value the less soluble it is.
