Particle theory: states of matter Flashcards
1
Q
Name the 3 states of matter.
A
Solids, liquids and gases.
2
Q
How are particles arranged in a solid?
A
- Particles in a solid are arranged in a regular pattern
- Though they vibrate they stay in a fixed position and cannot flow.
- They cannot be compressed.
They have a fixed shape and volume
3
Q
How are particles arranged in a liquid?
A
- Particles in a liquid are arranged in a random order.
- The particles stay close together but they can flow.
- They cannot be compressed.
4
Q
How are particles arranged in a gas?
A
- Particles in a gas are far apart and can flow easily.
- They are arranged in a random order and do NOT stay close together.
- They CAN be compressed.
5
Q
What are bonds?
A
Bonds are a chemical link which hold molecules together.
