Seperating Techniques Flashcards
Filtration
A separating technique used to separate a solution from an insoluble solid
Chromatography
A separating technique used to separate a mixture of soluble substances
Stationary phase
The phase in chromatography that doesn’t move
Mobile phase
The phase in chromatography that moves
Distillation
A separating technique used to separate two substances with different boiling points
Simple distillation
Distillation used to separate two liquids with very different boiling points
Fractional distillation
Distillation using a fractionating column for liquids with similar boiling points
Screening (step 1 to cleaning dirty water)
Removing large insoluble solids with a sieve
Sedimentation (step 2 of cleaning dirty water)
Small insoluble particles are allowed to separate by added chemicles
Filtration (step 3 of cleaning dirty water)
Sand and gravel beds remove insoluble solids
Chlorination (step 4 of cleaning dirty water)
Chlorine is added to kill microorganisms in the water
