Groups in the Periodic Table Flashcards
1
Q
What is Group 1?
A
The alkali metals
2
Q
Properties of the Alkali Metals
A
- Silvery solids that must be stored in oil
- Low melting and boiling points
- Very soft (can be cut with a knife)
3
Q
Reactivity of Group 1 Metals
A
- Very reactive as only one valence electron
- Reactivity increases as you go down the Group
- Only form ionic compounds (Cannot covalently bond)
4
Q
Reaction with water
Group 1
A
alkali metal + water -> metal hydroxide + hydrogen
5
Q
What is Group 7?
A
The Halogens
6
Q
Properties of the Halogens
A
- Melting points and Boiling points increase as you go down the group
At room temp: Chlorine is a gas, Bromine is a liquid, Iodine is a solid
7
Q
Reactivity of the Halogens
A
- Reactivity decreases as you go down the group
- Has 7 valence electrons
8
Q
What is Group 0?
A
The Noble Gases
9
Q
Reactivity of the noble gases
A
- More or less inert as they have a full outer shell of electrons
10
Q
Properties of the noble gases
A
- Low densities
- Melting and boiling points increase as you go down the group
- Non-flammable
- Full outer shell
