Mixture
A combination of two or more different pure substances, which can be separated easily (by physical means).
Pure Substance
A substance that cannot be separated easily into different substances (by physical means).
Suspension
Mixture where substances do not dissolve in one another but form layers.
Colloid
Mixture where substances spread out one in another without dissolving; it does not allow light to pass through.
Solution
Mixture where one substance dissolves in another so that there is only one layer; it allows light to pass through.
Solute
The substance that is being dissolved in a liquid to make a solution
Solvent
The liquid that dissolves another substance to make a solution
Soluble
Describes a substance that can be dissolved (in a particular liquid)
Insoluble
Describes a substance that cannot be dissolved (in a particular liquid)
Concentration (2)
A measure of the amount of solute dissolved in a solvent; the higher the amount of solute, the higher the concentration
Aqueous
Describes a substance that is in water, usually something that dissolves in water.
Dilute
Describes a solution where only a small amount of solute has dissolved
