Separation Techniques Flashcards
Why are mixtures ( usually) easier to separate than compounds?
Mixtures, unlike compounds, are not chemically joined together.
What is a solute? What is a solvent?
A solute is the solid being dissolved. A solvent is the liquid the solute is dissolving into.
What happens to solubility when the temperature decreases?
The solubility decreases as the temperature decreases.
Describe the four steps you would take to obtain salt from rock salt.
Grind up the rock salt with a pestle and mortar, add to a beaker of water and stir to dissolve the salt, filter the sand out through the paper in a funnel, then evaporate off the water in an evaporating dish to leave the salt behind.
What is chromatography used for?
Chromatography is a method used for separating mixtures.
Which separation technique is used to separate crude oil?
Fractional distillation.
When salt dissolves in water, which is the solute, solvent and solution.
salt-solute
water-solvent
salt-water - solution
What name is given to a liquid that cannot dissolve any more solid?
A saturated solution.
Will you be able to dissolve more or less salt at the higher temperature?
You will be able to dissolve more salt in the water at a higher temperature , because the particles are moving faster.
What is simple distillation and how does it work?
Simple distillation is a method used for separating out a mixture of a liquid and solid. The liquid is heated and boils off. It’s then cooled, condensed and collected, leaving the solid behind.
How could you check distilled water is pure?
You could check it’s boiling point is 100 degrees.
