separation techniques Flashcards
what is the purpose of chromatography
chromatography helps to separate different level of solubility substances from a mixture
why is it better to use pencil line then and ink line on chromatography
ink line would create extra spots unlike pencil spots
how to know is a sample is pure
if there is only one spot the sample is pure
what does it mean if there are no spots
if there are no spots it means that the mixture is not soluble in that particular solvent
state how magnetic attraction works in separation
magnetic separation separates solids from solids by attracting magnetic objects to the magnet to separate it from the non-magnetic objects
what does filtration separate
it separates insoluble solids from a liquid
what is the name of the substance found in the filter paper and beaker after filtration
filter paper = residue
beaker = filtrate
what does crystallisation separate
it separates decomposed solids from a solution
what is the purpose of simple distillation
obtain a pure solvent from a solution
what is the purpose of a condenser
condenser cools the vapour turning the liquid into distillate liquid
what is the difference between the apparatus used in simple distillation and fractional distillation
fractional distillation consit fractional column
what is the purpose of fractional column
to keep the temperature constant through out the process
what is the purpose of fractional distillation
to separate substances with different boiling points from a mixture
what does purity mean
purity of a substance means that the substance had fixed boiling and melting points
