Separation Techniques Flashcards
Filtration
Insoluble solid and liquid
* Filter paper has tiny holes in it
* Liquid particles can pass through the holes
* Larger solid particles cannot pass through
Distillation
Solute and solvent (keeps solvent)
* Solution is boiled so solvent turns to gas
* The gas is then cooled in a condenser where it condenses and is collected as a liquid
Chromotography
Mixtures of soluble solids
* A mixture like ink is placed on a piece of paper which is placed in the solvent
* As the solvent moves up the paper it seperates the solids creating a chromatogram
Evaporation
A solute and a solvent, keep solute
* The solution is heated then left in an evaporating basin till all the solvent evaporates
* The solute is left behind as a solid
