Atmosphere: Products of Combustion Flashcards
Carbon Dioxide
Formed by:
* Complete combustion
Causes:
* Climate change
What can we do:
* Find Alternative fuels and energy sources
* Reduce electricity use
* Reduce car journeys
Carbon Monoxide
Formed by:
* Incomplete combustion
Causes:
* Death - it is toxic
What can we do:
* Fit catalytic converters into cars
* Service gas boilers regularly
* Use carbon monoxide detectors
Particulates
Formed by:
* Incomplete combustion
Causes:
* Global dimming
* Breathing problems
What can we do:
* Put filters in diesel engines to trap particulates
Sulphur Dioxide
Formed by:
* Sulphur impurities in fuels reacting with oxygen when fuel burns
Causes:
* Acid Rain
What can we do:
* Remove sulphur from liquid fuels before they are burnt
* Remove Sulphur Dioxide from the waste gases after combustion in power stations
Nitrogen Oxides
Formed by:
* High temperatures in car engines making nitrogen and oxygen react
Causes:
* Acid rain
What can we do:
* Use low nitrogen fuels
