Separation processes Flashcards
Filtration process
The mixture of sand and water is poured into the filtered funnel.
The water passes through the filter paper to collect in the beaker.
The sand particles cannot pass through the filter and collect in the filter funnel
Evaporation process
Salt disappears into water
Boil solution to separate the salt from water
The water will be evaporated and the salt is left behind
Simple distillation process
Solution is heated and water evaporates
It is cooled and condensed into a separate container
Salt doesn’t evaporate so it is left behind
Fractional distillation process
Works when liquids are at different boiling points
When they are heated, one evaporates before the other
Chromatography process
Pencil line is drawn, spots of dye are placed on it, paper is lowered into solvent, and colours travel up it,coloured substances spread apart
Crystallisation process
Solution is warmed in an open container, allowing solvent to evaporate so it’s solution that has much solid devote dissolved in it as it can possibly contain is called a saturated solution. As a saturated solution is allowed to cool, the solid will come out of the solution and crystals will start to grow. The crystals can then be collected and allowed to dry
