C6 Flashcards
A student carries out electrolysis on molten sodium chloride. What is produced at the anode and cathode.
Cathode - sodium atoms
Anode - chlorine gas
Why can’t an ionic solid be electrolysed?
The ions are in fixed positions and can’t move
Positive metal ions are ? to the element of the cathode
Reduced
Negative non-metal ions are ? to the element at the anode
Oxidised
If a metal is more reactive than carbon, it is reduced with carbon / electrolysis takes place
Electrolysis takes place
If a metal is less reactive than carbon, it is reduced with carbon / electrolysis takes place
it is reduced with carbon
Cons of electrolysis
Very expensive as lots of energy is required to melt the ore and produce the required current
Why os cryolite added to aluminium oxide before electrolysis
Because it has a very high melting point so it lowers the melting point
Saves money and energy
