What is sieving?
Sieving is separation method which uses a sieve to separate the solid components of varying sizes found in a mixture.
What reasons would we use sieving?
To break down big parts of a mixture or pure substances.
What is evaporation?
Evaporation is when you boil a specific mixture of example copper sulphate and in result get solid but the liquid will turn into a gas.
Why would we use evaporation?
To get the solid from the liquid
Insoluble solids will work or even solids.
What is distillation?
Distillation is when you boil a mixture and capture both the liquid and the solid.
Why would we use distillation?
To try and capture the liquid as well.
Separate 2 liquids
Separate a solid from a liquid.
What is filtration?
Filtration is when you separate the solid from the liquid
Why would we use filtration?
Use it to only get the liquid and not the solid
Can use it to separate soluble solids but you need very fine filter paper.
What is chromatography?
A technique for the separation of a mixture by passing it in solution or suspension through a medium in which the components move at different rates.Eg pen ink on paper when put in water it separates all the different colours in the pen ink.
Why would we use chromatography?
To separate certain liquids from liquids.
To separate the pigments of a pure substance.
