Separating techniques Flashcards
Crystallisation/evaporation
To get the solute that is dissolved in the solvent, the solvent can be evaporated leaving the solute behind.
Filtering
To separate a liquid and a solid.
Distillation
To separate liquids with different boiling points or a liquid and a solid.
Basic idea of Distillation
Heat up a mixture of liquids with different boiling points or a mixture of a solid and liquid. A liquid boils/evaporates, goes up the tube and then down another one, which is surrounded by cold water which makes it condense. The liquid then falls into a different container.
Basic idea of evaporation/crystallisation
There is a solute dissolved in a solvent. To get the solute, the solvent gets evaporated and leaves the solute behind.
Basic idea of filtration
There is a piece of paper with a lot tiny gaps. Liquid gets through it but a solid won’t get through.
