Oceans Flashcards
What are gyres?
Areas in ocean where water flows arounds in circles in one area and slowly gets dragged to the middle.
Why may marine wildlife living in gyres may not do as well as marine wildlife living out of gyres?
Gyres take a lot of plastic because as soon as plastic goes into a gyre it stays in the gyre.
What is the pH of the ocean?
8.1
Is the pH of the ocean getting more or less acidic or alkaline?
The pH of the ocean is getting more acidic.
Why does the pH of the ocean change?
The pH of the ocean changes because carbon dioxide from factories can go into the water and the water takes it.
How does the pH of the ocean affect shell creatures in particular and might extinguish most marine animals if pollution goes out of control?
Shell creatures rely on nutrients to make their shells but carbonic acid caused by carbon dioxide are taking them away. If the pH of the ocean gets to low, then most marine creatures will die.
Soluble
Can be dissolved by a solvent
Solvent
The liquid that dissolves the soluble liquid
Insoluble
Cannot be dissolved by a solvent
solution
A mix of several different elements
residue
The thing that is left behind
How to draw a mixture in a particle diagram?
You have to include different types of particles.
Why is water an effective way of transferring heat?
Because water transfers energy more effectively than air.
Why is the pH of the ocean increasing?
Because 30-40% of carbon dioxide emitted by humans is absorbed by the ocean.
A bucket of hot water and cold water is put together. What will happen?
The hot water will go to the top and the cold water will go to the bottom as cold water has a higher density.
What acid does co2 form when dissolved in water?
Carbonic acid
Where do plastics come from
oil
How are plastics made
By reacting monomers to form polymers.
How are plastics made
By reacting monomers to form polymers.
What happens when thermoplastics are heated?
The thermoplastics melt/soften.
What happens when thermosets are heated?
They are formed by cross-links and will not melt.
Why are there so much plastic dumps?
Because plastic is not biodegradable`.
An alternative to using plastic
using starch polymers
