12
Q

What happens after a suspension occurs?

A

The insoluble substance either sinks to form a sediment, or if it has a low density floats on the surface of the liquid.

15
Q

When is it best to use the separating funnel?

A

When one substance does not mix with other but floats on top.

16
Q

What is it called when a mixture is spun very quickly so that the heavier substances are forced to the bottom and the lighter substances to the top?

A

Centrifuging

17
Q

How does distillation work?

A

When a solution is made up of substances of different boiling points. The solution is boiled and the substance with the lowest boiling point evaporates leaving the other substances behind. The evaporated substance travels down a condenser where it is cooled and condenses back into a liquid form, which in turn is collected. Once the first substance has been evaporated and collected, the temperature is risen so that the next substance with the lowest boiling point is able to evaporate and be collected. This is done until all the different substances have been separated from the solution.

18
Q

Solutions are __________?

A

Homogenous

19
Q

Suspensions are __________?

A

Heterogeneous

20
Q

In crystallisation if the mixture is cooled slowly, are the crystals that form large or small?

A

Large

21
Q

How can blood be separated, and what is it separated into?

A
  1. Centrifuging to separate red and white blood cells (2) with plasma and platelets (3) .
  2. Filtration to separate the red blood cells and the white blood cells.
  3. Centrifuging to separate the plasma and platelets.
22
Q

What is chromatography?

A

A separation technique that separates based on a variety of factors such as solubility, charge and size.
