Separating Complex Mixtures Flashcards
What is distillation?
A method used to separate a solid from a liquid or liquids that have boiling points ( when you want to keep both substances ). It is commonly used in many industries. Eg. Crude oil, tap water
- mixture that contains a number of different metals dissolved in it and particles of soil.
What are the 3 more complex separating methods?
Distillation, chromatography, centrifuging
What is chromatography ?
Different solids that are mixed together can be separated. You apply a mixture of solids to an absorbent paper and place it in the solvent. As it moves up the paper the solvent dissolves the solids and carries them with it.
What is centrifuging?
Another type of gravity separation. It separates mixtures by spinning.
