Absolute and conditional discharge
Absolute: record won’t show a conviction, won’t be on probation
Conditional: record will won’t show conviction if you meet judges conditions
Probation
A court order that serves a community, to control one’s behaviour. Can have combination of fines or jail time.
Restitution
Payment form offender to victim to cover expenses
Fines
Monetary penalties, combined with incarceration or probation.
Conditional sentences
Incarceration served in a community (eg. curfew, restriction of movement)
Intermittent imprisonment
Custodial or jail sentences of 90 days or less
Imprisonment/incarceration
Most serious ranging from 1day- life
Long term offender
An offender found by the court that is at risk to reoffend.
Dangerous offender
Behaviour unlikely to change (eg. shoot/mass shooter)
Indigenous sentencing
Judges look at all circumstances and consider all sanctions other than imprisonment
Parties to offence
Two or more people with the common intention to assist each other in a crime
Poised work environment
A form of discrimination in a work place
Restorative justice
A system of justice that focuses on rehabilitating through reconciliation(healing circles)
