Main clause example
Subject+verb+object =complete thought
E.g. My dog loves pizza crusts
Subordinate clause
Subordinating conjunction+subject+verb=incomplete thought
E.g. Whenever lazy students whine
Noun clause
E.g. You really don’t want to know the ingredients in Aunt Nancy’s stew
Ingredients= noun, this can then be replaced by a clause
E.g. You really don’t want to know what Aunt Nancy puts in her stew
Simple sentence
An independent clause e.g. I kicked the ball
Compound sentence
Two independent clauses joined by a linking word (and, but, so, or, yet, however)
E.g. I’m happy but my kids are always complaining
Complex sentences
One independent and one or more dependent clause
E.g. I’m happy, even though I don’t make much money
Compound-Complex sentences
Contains 3 or more clauses, 2 independent and at least one dependent
E.g. I’m happy, even though I don’t make much money, but my kids are always complaining, since we can’t afford to buy the newest toys
Active sentence
The subject of the sentence performs the action
Passive sentence
The subject of the sentence has an action done to it by something else
