Sentence definition
The largest unit in grammar – also called an independent clause.
Noun phrase (NP)
Structures where the most important word (the head – kerneled) is a noun or a pronoun.
Adjective phrase (AdjP)
Structures where the most important word (the head) is an adjective.
The two steps of sentence analysis
- Identify the sentence functions (external relationship)

Modifies or more closely defines the sentence or the verb. Can usually be omitted.
