A
  • Tests olifactory sense
  • Pt plugs one nostril
  • Smells common odor
  • Positive test if patient cannot smell
  • Implicates nasal lesions, anterior/ inferior cerebrum lesions

What is the CN II test?

A
  • Tests vision
  • 20’ from snellen chart; read one line at time , holding non-test eye closed
  • Positive test is impaired vision
  • Test peripheral vision by moving an object from the patient’s ear towards their field of vision.
  • Positive test if the patient cannot see the object before 90 degrees of forward gaze.

What is CN III test?

A
  • Tests oculomotor and pupillary assesment (inferior, medial, and superior rectus; inferior oblique, levator palpabral
  • Pt. follows PT’s finger drawing two large H’s.
  • Pt. blinks eyelids
  • Positive test is inability to follow finger, blink normally, or has double vision
  • Midbrain lesions

A
  • Tests superior oblique muscle
  • Pt. follows clinician’s finger in horizontal and vertical directions without head movement.
  • Positive sign is inability to move eye down and inward
  • Indicates midbrain lesions.
