Sensory Systems, Taste and Olfaction I Flashcards
What is a lateral line system?
In some animals, they can detect a change in pressure.
List the 4 receptors of the skin.
Meissner’s corpuscle
Markel Cells
Pacinian corpuscle
Ruffini endings
Sensory receptors transform mechanical energy to..?
electrical energy
Name the 4 receptor types to do with Modality.
Mechanoreceptors (hair cells)
Chemoreceptors (taste buds)
Thermoreceptors
Photoreceptors
Describe the 3 main transduction mechanisms for modality.
Mechanical: directly onto one cell
Chemical: Uses 2nd messenger or direct
Photoreceptor: uses 2nd messenger
What receptor is specific to mechanical transduction?
Muscle spindles (they become displaced).
What is the spatial arrangement of receptors called?
Receptive field. Smaller receptor fields are more accurate as they have many neurons on the skin for precision.
Why is the density of the receptor field important?
For resolution. Density is not uniform throughout the sensory organ. They can be localised for higher definition (e.g. fovea)
With an increase in intensity, there is an increase in……
rate of impulses. It is determined by the stimulus amplitude.
