Sensory Systems Flashcards
Vision: rods & cones
Rods: Are more numerous
Specialized for dim light
Cannot distinguish color and lack sharpness of vision
Cones: Less numerous
Respond to stimulation by bright light
Specialized for color recognition and sharpness of vision
Subdivided into blue, green, and red cones
Hearing pathway
Sound waves vibrate tympanic membrane
Ossicles vibrate and transmit waves to oval window
Fluid pressure waves in scala vestibule push vestibular membrane causing pressure waves and endolymph of cochlear duct

Specific regions of basilar membrane move
Hair cells distorted causing changes in neural transmitter release
Sensory neurons with axons in CN8 are stimulated to fire
Pressure is transmitted into scala tympani in absorbed by round window
