sensory receptors Flashcards
1
Q
what is the role of sensory receptors
A
detects a stimulus
2
Q
how do sensory receptors act as transducers?
A
they convert stimulus energy into electrical energy in the form of nerve impulses
3
Q
state the 4 types of receptors
A
- mechanoreceptor
- photoreceptor
- chemoreceptor
- thermoreceptor
4
Q
what is the stimulus and receptor for a mechanoreceptor?
A
- pressure
- pacinian corpuscle
5
Q
what is the stimulus and receptor for a chemoreceptor?
A
- chemical
- olfactory receptor
6
Q
what is the stimulus and receptor for a photoreceptor?
A
- light
- cone cell
7
Q
what is the stimulus and receptor for a thermoreceptor?
A
- heat
- krause bulbs
8
Q
describe the pacinian corpuscle
A
- pressure receptor
- located in the skin; mainly fingers and feet
- contain the end of a sensory neurone wrapped in layers of connective tissue called lamellae
- membranes have stretch mediated sodium channels which only allow Na+ in when stretched when pressure is applied
- causes lamellae to deform and press on sensory nerve ending
- creates a generator potential
