Sensory Perception Drugs Flashcards
Uses and considerations of latanaprost (4)
Constricts Pupil
Decreases IOP in open-angle glaucoma; maybe narrow-angle glaucoma with more studies
Not recommended for pts with torn or absent lens or eye trauma.
NO contact lenses for 15 minutes after administration.
Uses of prostaglandin Travoprost (6)
solution
Constricts Pupil
Decreases IOP in open-angle glaucoma; maybe narrow-angle glaucoma with more studies
Avoid use in patients with torn or absent lens or with eye trauma.
More effective in African Americans
Onset is 2 h, peak action 12 h.
Uses and Considerations of the cholinergenic agonist Pilocarpine (8)
constricts pupil
Decreased aqueous humor
Decreases IOP in open-angle and acute angle-closure glaucoma
prevents rise in postop IOP
drops or Gel: Apply gel -in ribbon in lower eyelid
Miosis decreases vision in dark environments.
Retinal detachment with retinal disease.
May worsen iritis.
Side Effects and adverse reactions of Prostaglandin named latanaprost (4)
Brown iris
dark eyelid
increased number, length, thickness, and darkening of eyelashes
Rare reports of retinal problems
Uses and considerations beta blocker levobunolol
Decreases IOP regardless of glaucoma.
Decreased miotic effect may decrease night vision
contraindicated for asthma, bradycardia, and HF.
additive effect with oral beta blockers.
Wait 15 minutes after administration before inserting contact lenses.
Prostaglandin Analogue indications and education
may worsen respiratory conditions
blurred vision
dyspnea
pulmonary crackles
wheeze
Remember about beta blockers (5)
eye discomfort
bad night vision
may worsen bradycardia, heart block, and obstructive respiratory conditions asthma & chronic bronchitis.
watch for blurred vision,
pulmonary wheeze.
remember cholinerginics like pilocarpine (5)
blurred vision,
dry mouth,
myopia
impaired dark vision
same resp. and heart issues as beta blockers
uses for beta blocker timolol (5)
drops
Decreases IOP in chronic open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension.
contraindicated for asthma, bradycardia, and HF.
additive effect with oral beta blockers.
Wait 15 minutes after administration before inserting contact lenses.
Uses and efects of alpha agonist Brimonidine (6)
decreases production and outflow of the humor
burning, stinging, blurred vision, and headache
may worsen narrow-angle glaucoma, tachyarrhythmias, and hypertension when used with epinepherine.
mydriasis, increases sensitivity to light.
blurred vision, tachycardia, and elevated blood pressure.
only used when beta blockers don’t work
uses and effects of anti vertigo drug meclizine
Drowsiness./Fatigue
Dry mouth
Blurred vision.
inform PA if for vertigo to adjust Rx
No driving
take 1 hour before departure
