Adult Health Promotion Flashcards
Definition and Examples (3)of Primary Health Prevention
Def: Optimize health/disease prevention
immunize
nutrition/exercise
sanitation
Definition and examples (4) of secondary prevention
Definition:
ID disease in early state for prompt treatment
Examples:
mammogram
prostate
TSA
yearly physicals
Tertiary Prevention Definition
minimizing effects of disease/disability
restorative, collaborative disease management. (Treatment)
Goal for optimization of health
maintain high-level wellness,
prevent illness
early detection
management of disease when it occurs.
USPSTF- U.S. Preventive Services Task Force 5 levels of evidence
Grade A: Strongly recomends.
Grade B: Recommends: moderate net benefit
Grade C – No Recommendation for or Against: net benefit is small
Grade D – Recommends Against: harms outweigh benefits.
I Statement – Insufficient Evidence to Recommend for or Against:
Pt/Community centered health promotion
must be valued & desired by those impacted.
individual must be motivated.
Community leaders must be involved to educate
Enculturation Health Promotion
full internalization of values of a culture group.
Healthy People Goals 2020
Attain high-quality longer lives free of preventable disease, disability, injury, & premature death.
Achieve health equity, eliminate disparities, and improve the health for all groups.
Create social &physical environments that promote good health for all.
Promote quality of life, healthy development/ behaviors across all life stages.

Pnuemo 13- over 65

Health promotion (opposed to wellness)
-adoption of healthy living
needs change in behavior
Wellness (opposed to health promotion)
- constantly changing
- positive state of individual thru community
Disease
Ifunctional or structural disturbance that results when a person’s adaptive mechanisms to counter-act stimuli & stresses fail.
Definition of Proliferation
Tissue of slow/fast proliferation?
New cells formed through a process of cell division
Slow= muscles, cartilage, bone
Fast=Epithelial, marrow, gi tract
Neoplasia
always abnormal
progressive multiplication of cells
leads to neoplasm (tumor)
Examples of benign neoplasms
endometriosis,
nevi
hypertrophic scars
Characteristics of a malignant neoplasm
abnormal function/ growth of cell
desimation of cell
come from differentiated cells
immortal/ become less like mother cell
Initiation Stage
irreversable mutation
cell abnormal but still carries out job
still ablte to replicate
Promotion Stage (3)
malignant cell must enter this stage
there’s latency between initiation and promotion
promoting agents stimulate the growth
Progression Stage
increased growth rate of the tumor
increased invasive ability of the tumor
metastasis
final stage leads to undifferentiated cell
Staging of a tumor
determining the size/location of the tumor
presence or absence of metastasis.
Grading of Cancers
measure degree of differentiation of neoplasms
Further from the original cell, worse the cancer
TNM Clinical Classification
Tumor size & invasiveness,
Nodes- spread to lymph nodes
Metastasis to distant organs.
In addition to primary cancer treatment, surgery can also be used for: (3)
prevention
palliation (relieve symptoms)
enhance functionality
Cancer intervention treatment goals
cure
control
palliation/end-of-life
nursing managment of radiation via external beam therapy or brachytherapy
(2)
patient education
management of symptoms
Nurses role in chemo care (5)
handle/administer chemotherapeutic agents,
manage side effects
assess and education patient
manage psychosocial issues.
chemotherapy certified W/ Oncology Nursing Society
Hormone therapy uses what substances for which kind of cancers
hormonal agonists or antagonists
used for
Breast, prostate, endometrial cancers
Nurses role in biologic therapy
side effects
psychological support
education
most common side effects and complications of cancer
Nutrition
immunity
infection
pain
