Sensory Abilities Flashcards
Primary Sense
Smell
Auditory ossicles
3 small bones in the middle ear
BAER
Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response, hearing test
Choroid
Layer of blood vessels that nourish the retina in the eye.
Cilia
Hairlike filaments that extend from olfactory cells into the nasal cavity.
Ciliary Body
Structure in the eye connecting the iris to the sclera.
Cochlea
Snail shaped structure that converts sound vibrations to nerve impulses.
Cones
Receptors responsible for seeing colours.
Cornea
Transparent covering at the front of the eye.
Dermis
Layer of skin containing hair follicles and glands.
Definition: Dolicocephalic
Long nosed skull structure
Pinna
Ear flap, outer visible portion of the ear.
Ectropion
Sagging outwards of the eyelid
Entropion
Rolling in of the eyelid
Epidermis
Outer layer of skin
Flea Bite Dermatitis
Allergic reaction to flea bites.
Ganglion Cells
Ganglia, Cells that transmit info from photoreceptors to the brain.
Goblet Cells
Cells within the MM that produce a fluid to keep the nasal cavity moist.
Guard hairs
Thick outer hairs of the coat.
Nictitating Membrane
Third Eyelid
Iris
Muscle that regulates the amount of light entering the eye.
Nasal Plane
Contains “finger print”, exterior hairless part of the nose that is visible.
Nuclear Sclerosis
Aging of the eye lens.
Olfactory Lobe
Structure within the brain dedicated to scent.
Otitis
Inflammation of the ear
PRA
Progressive Retinal Atrophy, hereditary disorder of the retina where light sensing cells die.
Retina
Layer of the eye that holds the light sensing rods and cones.
Rods
Receptors responsible for seeing light.
Sclera
Outer layer of the eye.
Sebaceous Gland
Gland within the skin that secrete oils to help keep haircoat waterproof.
Semicircular canals
Small tubes within the ear responsible for balance.
Sinuses
Hollows in the bones of the head.
Subcutis
Deepest layer of the skin, Subcutaneous layer.
Tapetum lucidum
Reflective layer at the back of the eye, produces “demon effect” in pictures.
Turbinates
Bony structures within the nasal cavity, increases surface area.
Undercoat
Soft wooly hair lying under the guard hairs.
Vomeronasal Organ
Jacobson organ, structure in the roof of the dogs mouth responsible for reacting to sex pheromones and smells underwater.
Canine FOV
240 - 250 degrees, varies on head shape.
Visual Overlap
FOV where the fields of both eyes are shared, 30 - 60 degrees.
Dogs stop focusing at what distance?
50 - 33 cm away
Cataract Types:
- Congenital: Present at birth
- Juvenile: Appear before 3 yrs
- Senile: After 8 yrs
Dolicocephalic breeds have ____ whereas brachycephalic breeds have _____. (In regards to vision)
Dolicocephalic -> + FOV - Visual overlap
Brachycephalic -> - FOV + Visual overlap
Step to Checking an Ear:
- Look in the ear 2. Smell the ear 3. Touch the ears.
