Senses Flashcards
process of receiving stimuli, and that stimuli is converted into nerve impulses and relayed to the brain
reception
translation of data into meaningful information (awareness)
perception
What part of the eye is affected with cataracts?
the lens
what part of the eye is affected with glaucoma?
ciliary bodies and canal of schlemm
What are some of the changes to the perception and reception of the eye when one has cataract vision?
blurred vision, decreased color perception, photophobia (double vision, lights bothering them, poor vision in the sunlight), glare
What are risk factors for cataracts?
age, obesity, genetics, sun exposure, smoking, heavy alcohol use, eye trauma, radiation, uncontrolled DM, corticosteriod use
what are factors affecting sensory perception?
lifestyle (smoking, drugs, stress)
environmental (chronic loud noise)
socioeconomic (cost of correction)

What is the number one cause of sensory alterations?
sensation
what are the common symptoms of burning tongue?

alterations in gustatory sense
what should a nurse do in order to assess the gustatory sense?
use safe items to test the patient’s ability
what are the gustatory interventions a nurse can do?
safety to prevent injury or illness
use substitutes
inability to determine hot and cold by touch
alterations in tactile
what is the safety intervention for tactile sense?
advising the patient to use the unaffected area when testing temperatures
inability to sense

patient is unable to see related to color blindness, night blindness, far sight vs near sight, total vs partial blindness
alterations in visual
what type of assessment is done to test the vision of a patient ?
eye examination and (for the nurse it’s the PERRLA examination, inability to follow objects, inability to see)
what safety precautions should be taken when dealing with visual alterations?
remove items that would cause falls or could cause other events. use of rails, walking, and home environment safety.
inability to respond to sound ; trouble with hearing subtle signs, constantly asking you to repeat information, doesn’t respond appropriately to vocal sounds
alterations in auditory
what should you not do when dealing with someone that has alterations in their auditory sense ?
do not raise your voice or over enunciate words
