Senses Flashcards
Chemoreceptors
Convert chemical energy into impulses that are transmitted to the brain
Taste receptor cells
Located in taste buds and within small projection on the tongue. Sensitive to sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami tastes.
Olfactory cells
Receptors for smell and are located in the mucous membrane in the nasal cavity. Impulses are initiated and sent to the brain when gaseous molecules bind to specific receptor sites.
Sense receptors
Receptors for temperature, touch, and pain. Each receptor is different in structure and is senstive to one kind of sitmulus.
Mechanoreceptors
Sensitive touch receptors and located close to the surface of the skin and pressure receptors are located deep under the skin and respond to stronger pressure.
Thermoreceptors
Respond to heat and cold and the hypothalamus monitors the body’s internal temperature
Pain receptors
All parts of the human body except the brain has pain receptors. These receptors are just branches of nerve cells. No sensory adaptation.
Proprioreceptors
Send messages to the brain to relay information on the movement of the parts of the body. Located in the muscles, joints, and tendons.
Sensory adaptation
Receptors become used to stimuli and stop generating nerve impulses even if the stimulus is till present.
