Hearing Flashcards
Pinna
Part of the outer ear and collects sounds waves
Auditory canal
Part of the outer ear and collects sound waves
Tympanic membrane
This is the eardrum and it conducts sound waves to the ossicles through vibrations
Ossicles
Set of three small bones that amplify sound and conduct the vibrations to the oval window (cochlea region)
Eustachian tube
Equalizes pressure on both sides of the tympanic membrane
Organ of Corti
Located in the central canal of the cochlea with a lower and upper membrane with hairs on the lower membrane that are receptor cells
Basilar membrane
Located in the cochlea and its movement causes hair cells to bend, which causes depolarization of the membrane
Conductive hearing loss
Hearing loss due to the outer and middle ear failing to conduct vibrations to the cochlea. This can be corrected by a hearing aid which amplifies sound before it enters the ear
Nerve deafness
Caused by defects in the sensory cells in the cochlea, auditory nerve, brain, inherited disease, or infection. A cochlear implant can provide correction by stimulating the auditory nerves with electrical impulses.
Utricle and Saccule
Responsible for balance and equilibrium, and contain endolymph, sensory hair cells, and otoliths. Respond to movements of the head.
Semicircular canals
Detects three-dimensional movements because the flow of endolymph causes hair cells to bend, which generates an action potential and impulses are sent to the cerebellum
What are the two mechanoreceptors in the inner ear?
Utricle & Saccule and the semi-circular canals
