Sense Organs Flashcards
What are the groups that sense organs are divided into?
general senses (touch or pressure, pain, temperature, proprioception, visceral sensations) and special senses (eye, ear, equilibrium, smell, taste)
What are the 3 layers of the eye globe?
fibrous layer, vascular layer, nervous layer
Where is the aqueous humor produced?
at the ciliary body
What are the ocular muscles?
4 rectus muscles, 2 oblique muscles, 1 retractor muscle
What is conjunctiva?
the inner mucous membrane of the eye
What produces tears?
lacrimal gland
What are the 3 subdivisions of the ear?
external, middle, inner
What are the parts of the external ear?
pinna, external acoustic meatus
What are the parts of the middle ear?
tympanic membrane, malleus, incus, stapes, vestibular oval window
What are the parts of the inner ear?
semicircular canals, cochlea, cochlea duct
What is the perilymph?
action of the stapes on the vestibular window results in pressure changes transmitted by perilymph. It is the fluid found within the ear.
What is the olfactory mucosa?
Loaded with olfactory cells which are bipolar neurons with ciliated dendrites and axons penetrating the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone of the skull to enter the olfactory bulb and meet cells from the olfactory tract
What is the vomeronasal organ?
there are ducts in the hard palate that are lined with olfactory mucosa that connects to oral cavities by the incisive ducts
What is gustation?
the sense of taste
What are the cells associated with gustation?
gustatory cells – sensory, sustentacular cells – supporting, serous secretory cells
