Q

characteristics

A
  1. amplitude - how loud It is
    - measured in dB (decibels)
    - risk at 120+
  2. purity - how intense the frequency is.
    - number of frequencies vary in voices and music/sounds
    - single frequency = most pure
    - more frequency = less pure
  3. wavelength - measures the frequency
    - measured in hz (hertz)
    - range = 20 - 20k hertz

Q

characteristics

A
  1. Receptor - hair cells in basilar membrane (found within snail shape in the ear)
  2. outer ear - pinna-funnels and localizes sound (send sound to eardrum)
  3. middle ear - the ossicles (happen, anvil, stirrup) in eardrum amplify sound)
  4. inner ear - fluid filled cochlea which houses sound receptors and is involved with determining the pitch (frequency analysis)

Q

name the two theories in the audition-auditory perception

A
  1. place theory
    - place on basilar membrane which recognizes pitch.
    analogy: think of a harp
    - vibrations occur at different spots of basilar membrane
    - hair cells respond independently.
  2. frequency theory
    - all hairs on membrane vibrate. analogy: think of a drumhead
    - whole membrane vibrates though the speed differs.
