Sensation and Perception Flashcards
Sensation
Input about the physical world provided by sensory receptors
Perception
Process by which we select, organize and interpret input from sensory receptors
Absolute Threshold
Smallest amount of stimulus required for it to be detected 50% of the time
Signal Detection Theory
Decision making mechanisms involved in deciding whether a stimulus is present or not
Difference Threshold
Amount of change required in physical stimulus to notice a difference
Just Noticeable Difference
Smallest amount of change required in physical stimulus necessary to notice a difference
Types of Eye Movements
- Version movements - involuntary, saccadic, pursuit movements
- Vergence Movements
Trichromatic Theory
Three types of cones sensitive to Red, Green and Blue
- fails to explain negative after-image
Opponent Process Theory
6 kind of cells - Red&Green, Blue&Yello, Black&White (when one is stimulated, the other is inhibited)
Blind Sight
- blind but can react to certain visual stimulus without realising they have actually seen something
Prosopagnosia
loss of ability to recognize faces
