Sensation and perception Flashcards
Sensation - definition:
The processing of basic information from the outside world by using sensory receptors
Perception definition:
Organising and interpreting sensory information about objects, events, spatial layout of our surrounding world
Name two way of studying visual perception
Preferential looking technique and Habituation
Technique that involves showing infants two patterns or objects/sounds at a time, and seeing which they prefer, is called
Preferential looking technique
Technique that involves presenting an infant with a same stimuli until their response declines, if their response increases when a new stimuli is introduced, we can infer they can differentiate the two stimuli: name this technique
Habituation
At what age do infants start being able to track visually
Around 2/3 months old
Cognitive disorder where patients have deficits in identifying familiar faces or objects: name and where it originates in brain
Prosopagnosia, originates mostly in fusiform gyrus / fusiform face area
In depth perception, at what age does an infant start to view things in a 3Dimensional aspect
Around 4 months old, also called Stereopsis
In depth perception, what happens around 6/7 months old
Infant starts to be sensitive to pictorial cues (ie can differentiate a picture from the real world), they start being able to see with one eye only
When will auditory perception be at adult level ?
Not until 5 or 6 years old
Taste and smell sensitivity only happens after brith, True or false?
False, it develops before birth and two weeks after birth they start to differentiate the scent of their mother to other moms
Two motor developmental sequences are
Gross motor development (crawling, standing, walking) and Fine motor dev. (Reaching , Grasping)
Infants typically start crawling at the age of
8 months, although crawling is not a mandatory step, they can go into walking directly
Infants typically start walking alone or with a toddling bait at the age of
13/14 months - around 1 yo
